Estuaries do not necessarily have any specific location on earth. They are always on the coast along the ocean, but can be in found in any part of the world. The image above shows every estuary in the United States.
Different types of estuaries:
Coastal plain estuaries: formed when glacial ice melts which causes sea levels to rise and coastal plains to flood. (examples: Chesapeake Bay and Long Island Sound)
Tectonic estuaries: formed when earthquakes cause the land to sink and seawater fills the sinkhole (example: The San Francisco Bay)
Fjord estuaries: valley formed from glacial movement. Glaciers can cut very deep valleys along coastlines and then fill with water. (example: along the Scandinavian coast and in Alaska)
